How to Apply for New Zealand Visa in the Philippines

New Zealand

Kia Ora! Finally the long wait for a direct link from Manila to Auckland will be over very soon as Philippine Airlines announces its upcoming flight to New Zealand via Cairns, Australia starting December 2015.

For the fans of The Hobbits and The Lord of the Rings, this is a welcome development as this means easy access to the Middle Earth. No need for a transfer from Australia, Singapore or Hong Kong.

More than the Hobbitons, New Zealand is indeed a dreamland… a surreal place! It is a mystical and picturesque nation blessed with dense native forests, mountains, islands and beaches, glaciers, thermal regions and fiords. A place where traditional culture and modernity beautifully intertwine. A perfect synergy of nature, culture and adventure. See the thermal wonderland of Roturua, trek to Tongariro National Park, hike the Franz Josef Glacier, explore Tabel Asman National Park, go bungy jumping in Auckland Bridge, catch the Aurora Australis in South Island, spend a day of adventure in Queenstown or cruise the Milford Sound. Whenever and wherever you may be in New Zealand, from North to South Island, there is certainly something amazing waiting for you!

For the purpose of tourism, Philippine passport holders require visitor visa to enter New Zealand. Worry not because application is easy and fee is only minimal for short stay visitor (less than 59 days), in fact you will only be paying for the processing fee of less than a thousand. According to New Zealand Immigration Website, a visitor visa allows one to stay in New Zealand as a visitor for a limited amount of time for the following purposes:

• To visit as a tourist
• To visit friends or relatives
• To play sport or perform in cultural events without pay
• To get married
• To undertake short-term study

Personal Experience and Tips

Personally speaking, getting a New Zealand visitor visa is easy. For my part, I just completed the necessary requirements – valid passport, accomplished and signed application form with photos, certificate of employment, bank certificate, photocopy of my company ID, Certificate of Compensation Payment / Tax Witheld (BIR Form 2316), itinerary of my travel and the invitation from a friend in New Zealand (with attached bank statement). The invitation wasn’t really necessary for short stay visit. Make sure to photocopy all the documents including the information page of your passport.

Then I walked-in to their visa application center in Makati to lodge my application and pay the processing and courier fee in cash, no appointment necessary. It took me only an hour (during my lunch break in the office) for the whole process. Thankfully, they have no noon break.

After three working days, my New Zealand visitor visa was already delivered on my mailing address. I was given a one (1) year multiple entry.

  4. Hi,
My partner (defacto) will invite by my mom’s friend (tita) as her daughter is getting married late this July. Tanong ko lang po if ma grant kaya sya ng visit visa if first time lang nya alis ng bansa?
if palarin, he will look for an employer to issue him a job offer since his job is longterm need in NZ. nagkataon lang na kulang funds namin to enroll for a 1yr diploma. (sana me scholarship grant hehe). 2nd question, if palarin sya makakuha ng job offer, pwede na ba palitan ang kanyang visit visa into working visa? hope may makasagot po sa mga tanong ko. salamat po in advance 🙂

      Hi, Enna C.

Its a merit if you have previous travel before applying a NZ Visit Visa. However, it is not an assurance. It will really depend to the consul how strong the documents you have. Its a matter of convincing them that (1)you will come back to the Philippines after your visit, (2) you have strong ties in Philippines, if you have sponsor then strong ties in NZ (3) enough funds to sustain living expenses in NZ. All i can suggest, attach more supporting documents of your NZ sponsor such as Letter of Invitation, Bank Certificate, Bank Statement, Passport/Visa & Affidavit of Support.

I am not so familiar with changing visa from visit to working. Anyway, this is what i have read on the NZ immigration site:

      A. VISIT
-> 5. IM ALREADY IN NZ, MY PLANS HAVE CHANGED
-> MY SITUATION HAS CHANGED – VISIT
-> WHILE IM IN NZ AS A VISITOR CAN I LOOK FOR A JOB?
-> WHEN YOUR VISA WAS GRANTED, IT WAS ON THE BASIS OF YOU VISITING NZ.
-> YOU CAN WORK ON A VISITOR VISA, BUT YOU CAN LOOK FOR WORK
-> WE CALL YOUR INTENTIONS YOUR BONA FIDES. WHILE YOU CAN LOOK FOR WORK OR ATTEND A JOB INTERVIEW IN NZ ON A VISITORS VISA, YOUR PRIMARY PURPOSE MUST BE TO VISIT

      B. VISIT
-> 5. IM ALREADY IN NZ, MY PLANS HAVE CHANGED
-> MY SITUATION HAS CHANGED – VISIT
-> Can I apply for any other visa while on a visitor visa in New Zealand? Want to stay longer?
      -> Apply to stay longer
-> If you’re already in New Zealand and have a visa you can reapply for the same visa or apply for a different one.

For more details and other information, you click this link https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/already-have-a-visa/my-situation-has-changed/visit

  5. mich

    Hi,

Can I apply a visit visa even without a ticket yet? Coz I am planning to get one if my application will be granted just making sure na hndi madeny. Hehe and is it necessary to provide a bank statement from a sponsor? Thanks for the response in advance. 🙂

    1. Jeff JB

      Hi, Mich.

It is not advisable to buy a flight ticket if your visa is still on process or not yet granted. The embassy is not responsible for the refund of your ticket in case of visa disapproval. In fact, they prefer flight reservations only in your visa application. You may purchae an air ticket once visa is approved.

If you have sponsor, the more supporting documents you have, the better. So dont hesitate to attach your sponsor’s bank statement.

  6. Arlene Manguray

Hi if 2 weeks stay in NZ need ba ng medical certificate? thanks in advance for the answer.

    1. Jeff JB

      Hi, Arlene.

2 weeks stay? No need. Nz only require medical certificate if staying for than 6months.

  7. Bea Sim

    Hi,

When you applied for the visa, how long did it take for you to get your passport back? Cause I’ll be travelling to Thailand on July 14-18 then New Zealand on the 1st week of August, aabot ba passport ko for Thailand if I process the NZ visa this week?

Hope you could help me out here. 🙂
    Thank you!

    1. Jeff

Hi, Bea. I am not the owner of lakwatsero.com but since shes busy, i will answer you on her behalf. In my case, i got mine text on 7th day and received my visa on 8th day. It will really depend on the consul but as a rule of a thumb, you have to estimate 15days-1month you will not be disappointed. If you apply this month of June 2016, definitely youll get your passport before your Thailand trip on July 16. Think positive and enjoy Spring season tour in ur NZ trip this Sep.

      1. Bea Sim

Thank you so much! Last question though, the visa application link is currently unavailable, can I get the application form in VIA Centre in Makati?

        1. Jeff JB

          Hi, Bea.

Really?have not checked the VIA site yet. Anyway, i can send the pdf file for the application tomorrow just for you. Please encode your email address. By the way, how many weeks or months are you going to stay in NZ?What city?

          1. Bea Sim

Thank you, Jeff! Yeah, I think it’s undergoing maintenance. 2-3 weeks maybe and most of my stay will be in Wellington, my cousins & grandma live there. 🙂

            My email is: [email protected]

Thank youuuu! Btw, I was thinking of applying an Australian visa as well, have you tried? 🙂

          2. Jeff JB

            Hello, Bea.

Pdf file already sent. Please check.

          3. PatD

Hi Bea, just to provide some insight on your question regarding applying for an AU visa, I did the same thing as the blog owner and applied for one first before getting a NZ visa. I attached my AU Visa Grant Notice to my NZ application to increase the likelihood of approval and I’m glad things turned out positively. Went last month and to echo what Jeff JB said, make sure to put Queenstown on your itinerary. You won’t regret it but check the weather forecast as it’s very unpredictable over there and could get tours cancelled or rescheduled as it did some of mine. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

          4. Jeff JB

            Hi, Bea.

            Have you checked my email?

Anyway, just to add infos of PatD. I myself had a hard time finding a transpo to Hobbiton in a budget way since all of the tour operators leave Auckland to Hobbiton very early in the morning(7-8am) and it is not cheap. Intercity is really the most affordable bus company which will cost you NZD150.00 only. However, all of your time will be wasted in travelling from 7am-7pm(with 2hr hobbiton tour only) by taking Intercity bus. You will also change bus from Hamilton and Matamata so it is really inconvenient in your part. I highly recommend Kiwi Fun Tours which is NZD169.00 only. The bus leaves 9:30am, 9:45am and 10am at the pickup point. You will have plenty of stops like: toilet break, coffee break, Hauraki Plains and lunch break at 12:30pm in Matamata City. The Hobbiton tour will start at 2pm and end at 4pm. After the tour, you will have time to buy some souvenirs at the Shire’s Rest and last stop in Hokey Pokey Ice Cream store(super huge single scoop ice cream for Nzd1.50 only). Arrive in Auckland at 6.30-7pm. You do not need to change bus since you will be using Kiwi Fun tours coaster van. Lunch meal is not included. If you avail with other tour operators, it is impractically expensive and will cost you more than NZD270.00. If you have limited time, 1day Auckland City tour and 1day Hobbiton tour is already fine. The rest of the day will be consumed in Queenstown. Queenstown is really breathtaking. You have plenty to see and experience their such as Aoraki Mt Cook Park, Lake Wanaka, Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Te Anau Glowing worms, Lord of the Rings tour, Skyline Gondola, Bungy Jumping, etc. Same as PatD, I was there last month Autumn season and it was freaking freezing cold at -3C degrees. Take it from us(PatD & Angel), you have to include Queenstown.

        2. Bea Sim

          Hi PatD,

I hope you can see this message. I am not sure why there is no reply button on your comment. 🙁

Oh yeah, I read a lot of reviews saying that when visiting NZ, one should never miss Queenstown. I heard it’s expensive in there but worth it (?) I’m torn whether I should visit Auckland or Queenstown. I really wanna see the Hobbiton. Can you suggest which place is better for someone who doesn’t have anyone accompanying them? I’ll be alone when I travel to Auckland or Queenstown so I cannot go to both places. 🙂

          Thanks heaps!

          1. PatD

Did my trip solo. If weather-permitting (very little to no chance of rain), I would choose Queenstown any day. Heck, even if it’s raining actually. I don’t think one place is more expensive than the other but Queenstown being the adventure capital of the world and if you’re into that stuff checking off things in your bucket list such as bungy jumping or skydiving (and a lot more!), it’ll absolutely break the bank because there’s no shortage of activities to do unless you’re only doing the several free walking nature treks which are wonderful as well. Auckland is real nice too but note that Hobbiton is a guided tour that lasts no more than 2 hours meaning you’re on the clock when you go there. I took a bus tour going there with Intercity from Auckland Central and I arrived back in the city past 7pm (left for Hobbiton at 8am) so the actual journey will do a number on you but commuting is easier in Auckland compared to Queenstown unless you plan to drive. Since you’re visiting in the winter, bring tons of warm clothes for Qtown. I went in autumn and it was freezing even without snow. Hope that helps.

          2. Bea Sim

            Hi Jeff,

Yup, got it! I actually replied, I am just not sure if you received it. Haha! Sorry if this looks messy, there’s no reply button under your comments so I just replied to my own comment. 🙁

There’s this tour I saw online (http://www.greatsights.co.nz/new-zealand-tour-destinations/waitomo-caves-tours/auckland-sights-hobbiton-waitomo-combo/) and I’m not sure if it’s worth it. If you have time, kindly check the link. 🙂

I checked the Kiwi Fun Tours though and now I’m thinking of getting that instead of the link I gave you. Would it be advisable if I just book Kiwi Fun Tours and have the Auckland sightseeing on my own? Can I do it alone especially for a first timer like me?

Oooh, dang! Now I’m actually considering going to Queenstown. My only problem is… how do I get there? I mean, most of my stay will be in Wellington since my family lives there. Should I book a round trip airline ticket from Wellington to Auckland OR Wellington to Queenstown? Which one’s better? What about my transpo from Queenstown to Auckland (vice versa)? I really have no idea. 🙁

I’m sorry for all these questions but I love all the info that you guys give me. Thank you so much for all your help. 🙂

          3. Bea Sim

            Hi PatD,

I would love to go bungee jumping/skydiving but I’m kinda scared… No, I am terrified!!! HAHAHA! But I do love adventures, it’s just that my family couldn’t come with me to Auckland & Queenstown so I’d be all alone there. 🙁

Oh my, I really should prepare for this winter trip. Yikes! There, that’s my problem. 🙁 I don’t know how I can tour around Queenstown without a car. Are there cheap city tours I can avail online? How did you travel to Queenstown from Auckland? I’ll be coming from Wellington and I know it’ll cost me a lot if I ride the plane from Wellington to Auckland and/or Queenstown (vice versa) then back to Wellington. Any other suggestions? 🙂

            Thank you!

          4. PatD

Finding the ‘Reply’ button is quite tricky here LOL. Anyway, I took a 1-way flight from Auckland to Qtown via Jetstar for approx. $80+ NZD with a 30kg check-in baggage allowance. That’s the cheapest I could get based on months of checking online fares. A lot of Kiwis don’t recommend flying Jetstar but if you’ve flown CebuPacific, there’s nothing to worry about. I didn’t have any issues. Alternatively, you can take Intercity or Nakedbus for overland travel. The latter offers $1 NZD fares, if you can chance upon them that is. The travel times are considerably long though. I got on the bus from Hamilton to Auckland and that bus came from Wellington which was a 9-hour journey so if you’re pressed for time, air travel’s the practical choice. When in Auckland, get an AT Hop card. It’s a tap-on/tap-off reloadable transport card you can use to pay for major transportation systems (bus, ferry, train). It’s cheaper than paying cash. In Qtown, buy a Connectabus card (didn’t try it myself). Paid cash as I was there briefly. I know an unlimited day pass is about $30 NZD and an unlimited weekly pass costs about $40+ NZD. Not cheap but generally, NZ isn’t. Check out bookme.co.nz for discounted tours. Got some of mine there and they’re legit. If you’re looking for accommodations in Qtown, check out Blue Peaks or nearby places. I didn’t stay there so I don’t know how reasonable their rates are but it’s walking distance to the city center where pretty much all of the tours start and end. Be wary of accommodations that say 30 or so minutes’ walk to city center – it is a loooong walk and some of it may be uphill/downhill so if you’re freezing your bum off, that’s the last thing you want to worry about. Intervals bet. bus arrivals are longer in Qtown than Auckland.

          5. Bea

            Hi PatD,

Thanks! Jeff also suggested to take Jetstar as it is cheaper than other airlines. I have already tried Jetstar in the past and it was okay, nothing unusual or what. Haha! Oh, that’s cheap considering you have a 30kg check-in baggage.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m now checking out bookme.co.nz for the tours. Regarding the accommodation, I will keep those in mind. Hahaha! Yes, 30 mins walk or so IS far. HAHAHA! Maybe I’ll check airbnb as well. Thank you so much, PatD!

    2. Lakwatsero

      Thanks for replying Jeff.

In my case, I got my visa after four days. My friend, on the other hand, got it after 10 days. I guess it depends on the requirements you submitted. If they do not see any issue with what you submitted, everything will be smooth and fast. Otherwise, they will perform more validation and ask for supplementary requirements from you which might delay its release. 🙂

      1. Bea Sim

Thank you so much for all the info you’ve given me. Love your blog, btw! 🙂

  8. micah

Hello! I’d like to ask, is it really required that you need to have round trip tickets to apply for a visa? It’s a bit risky to get one without having a visa yet. Thank you!

  9. Jeff JB

Hello Guys, got mine last March 2016, released after 8days, single entry valid for 3months. Just came back from NZ, the place is amazing. Auckland is wonderful but Queenstown is breathtaking. Real middle-earth experience. A must for everyone.

    1. micah

Hi Jeff, ask ko lang required ba na may plane tickets na to present as a requirement in applying for a visa. Yun nalang kasi yung kulang ko if ever. I also have sponsor/relatives who lives there and I’m planning to visit them around September this year. Thank you!

      1. Jeff

Hi Micah, sorry for the late reply. Once your NZ visa is granted, thats the time you buy your ticket. I assume you are applying tourist visa so it is required to have roundtrip ticket. One way ticket is only allowed for passengers holding student, immigrant and working visa. Other than that, visit or tourist visa must secure roundtrip air ticket. If you are still collecting documents or still applying, you dont need to purchase air ticket yet. All you need to do is to provide a flight reservation only. I suggest to book it in any Pal Ticket office(main office not agency). Book it there and let the agent send your flight bookings to your email and print it. That is the one you arr going to present upon application of visa. Email is free unlike booking thru agencies, youll pay booking fee. Feel free to contact me for other query

i want to apply for visitor visa currently unemployed, bank statement lng po my brother and my sis-in-law is currently working in new zealand is it possible na ma approved ung visa ko kahit bank statement and sponsorship lng from family? kasama ko din mag aaply for visa ung anak nila 3 years old…pls answer

    1. Jeff JB

The more attachment the better.

    2. cynthia lacuna

hi , plano po sana namin mag apply ng visa for NZ, how much po need na nkalagay sa bank statement? thank you

  12. Joy

My bf in NZ will have sponsorship for me,
Do I still need a working certificate at show money for my visitors visa just for 56 days or 3months stay on NZ?

    1. Jeff JB

Hi Joy, If you are working here in the Philippines, it is recommended to submit a certificate of employment as a proof that you have stable job and strong tries in the Philippines even if you have a sponsor in NZ.

  13. Rina

Can i apply with only bank statement? Currently unemployed and planning to tour NZ with my fiance,.

    1. Jeff JB

No, a big chance you will not be granted. Of course, you should submit the following:

If employed: NZ application form, Passport, 2copies photo, Bank Cert & Statement, COE, ITR, Payslips, Company ID

If with sponsor: Letter of Invitation, Bank Cert & Statement, Passport

  14. Toni A

HI Kahit ba na di ako nagbayad ng 6300 na visa fee kasi less than 59 days lang ang number of days plan to stay in nz, is it still possible na mabigyan ako ng multiple entry visa? thanks

    1. PatD

Travelling to NZ for 1 week next month. No other fees collected at PIA other than visa handling fee (Php350.00) plus courier service for passport delivery to my home address (Php200.00). Applied online and personally went to PIA to provide my passport. Was granted a 3-month multiple-entry visa. Took 3 days from when I dropped by PIA (Mon) to when my passport was delivered (Thurs) but officially they set expectations for processing bet. 10-15 days. Courier’s Air21 in my case. Received a text from PIASI Wed night that my passport had been transferred to the courier followed by a text from Air21 with the tracking no. and the ETA’s the next day. SMS does not advise you if your visa has been approved until you actually see your passport. Tip: Bring a brown envelope to put your passport in for delivery. You can also purchase from PIA at the receptionist but if they run out, not sure where the nearest supply store is other than Alphaland which is not within walking distance of Allegro Center where PIA is located. It will depend. In my case, we applied NZ tourist visa with my 2 colleagues. I got single entry 3mos, my 2 colleagues got multiple entry 1year and 3years. But the possibility you will get a multipl-entry visa is that you have enough funds on your bank account and you have previous approved visa for US, Canada, Australia, Uk, Schengen and NZ. In my case, I have none except South Korea and Japan visa only. So it will depend to the consul.

Is there a need for a PEDOS if your visa is visitor’s and you’ll be staying only for 48 days? i will be leaving on April 20,2016.

    1. Jeff JB

      No need

Hi. Is an Australian Transit Visa needed since the flight from Manila-Auckland-Manila will be via Cairns? Thank you.

    1. Jeff JB

      Hello, Dyan.

Are you taking Philippine Airlines flight? If yes, then flight to Manila to Auckland has a transit in Cairns, Australia for just 1 hour only. So there is no need for you to get an Australian Tourist nor Transit visa but make sure you have stay at the airport. In my case, I took Pal flight to Auckland via Cairns. They only check your Phil Passport and Nz tourist visa.

Hi nung nag apply ka ba ng tourist visa online pinadala mo yung passport mo sa kanila? 🙂

    1. Jeff JB

      Hi, Maria Luisa.

I am not Angel but I can answer it for you. Yes, original passport must be submitted since the NZ visa will be posted in your passport once granted.

is there a greater chance of tourist visa approval when you have a confirmed sponsorship form? is Certificate of Employment acceptable to prove that i’m a bona fide applicant? Thank you!

    1. Jeff JB

      Hi, Thessa Marie.

Yes, there is a chance but not an assurance. As long as you can prove to the NZ consul that you have enough funds or your sponsor can handle the expenses during your trip in NZ, you have stable job and strong ties in Philippines then I can say you have a greater chance you will be granted a NZ visa.
